Flint Hills Resources was born out of a desire to better compete and pursue opportunities in the refining and chemicals industries. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch Industries, Inc., and has independent leadership and separate financial decision-making authorities. Flint Hills Resources was named for the Flint Hills of Kansas, an area that features lush tall grass prairies, pristine natural springs and beautiful vistas. The company’s headquarters is in Wichita, Kan., near the Flint Hills.
The following key dates are important in the company's more than six decades experience in the refining and chemicals businesses.
1940
Fred C. Koch and two partners form Wood River Oil & Refining Co. to build a small refinery in Illinois.
1946
Company buys the Rock Island Oil & Refining Co., owners of crude oil gathering system and small refinery in Duncan, Okla.
1959
Company acquires minority interest in the Great Northern Oil Company, owner of the Pine Bend Refinery in Rosemount, Minn. Acquisition includes an interest in the South Saskatchewan Pipeline Company, which became the company's first Canadian business interest.
1969
Company becomes majority owner of the Pine Bend Refinery.
1981
Koch Refining Company acquires Corpus Christi West Plant and a crude oil gathering system in South Texas. Chemicals Group established.
1995
Koch Petroleum Group acquires Corpus Christi East Plant.
1999
Koch Petroleum Group launches Blue Planet® earth-friendly gasoline, a low-sulfur fuel. Other Performance Fuels offered in Midwest and other areas.
2000
Koch Petroleum Group and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency sign Clean Air Act Agreement
2001
The Pine Bend and Corpus Christi refineries earn national certification from the Wildlife Habitat Council for conservation and reclamation efforts.
2002
Koch Petroleum Group is renamed Flint Hills Resources. The new logo is patterned after an 18th century chemist's symbol for oil.
2003
Flint Hills Resources acquires interest in Excel Paralubes in Westlake, La. Begins marketing Group II base oils used in automotive, agricultural and marine products.
2004
Flint Hills Resources earns Clean Air Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for reducing refinery flare time and emissions.
2004
Flint Hills Resources Alaska formed; acquires North Pole refinery and products terminals in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska.
2004
Flint Hills Resources acquires chemical intermediates assets, including a production plant near Joliet, Ill.
2005
Flint Hills Resources acquires asphalt terminal system from a sister Koch company and begins marketing asphalt produced at the Pine Bend Refinery in Minnesota.
Pine Bend Refinery celebrates 50 years of operations.
2006
Flint Hills Resources constructs a new fuel terminal in Bastrop County, Texas, to supply jet fuel to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin.
2006
Flint Hills Resources celebrates 25 years of operating in Corpus Christi, Texas. A predecessor company purchased what is now the West Plant from Sun Petroleum Products Company.
2007
Flint Hills Resources completes acquisition of chemical and polymer assets from Huntsman Corp.
