Flint Hills Resources has ongoing efforts to reduce emissions at its plants. A key component of the emissions reduction programs at its Texas and Minnesota refineries is the ability to reduce flaring – especially during times of startup, shutdown and malfunction. Since 1999, the company reduced flaring by 89.7 percent. The company installed a flare gas recovery system at its east plant within the Corpus Christi Refining Complex in 2007. In Alaska, the plant flared an average of 2 minutes per day during 2007.
In 2004, Flint Hills Resources finalized a relationship with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to share the company’s approach to reducing flaring at its refineries during periods of startup, shutdown and malfunction. Under this program, Flint Hills Resources developed and shared a protocol that EPA has used to share with the industry.
