Base Oils - Processing Overview

The Excel Paralubes production uses state-of-the-art hydrocracker, hydrodewaxing, and hydrofinishing technology to produce oils with very low sulfur and an extremely high percentage of saturates. The process is illustrated in this flow diagram:

  • Vacuum distillation, the final step in crude oil processing, provides the gasoil feedstock for the base oil process.
  • Hydrocracking is the most severe lube oil refining process. Hydrocracking provides high viscosity index (VI) product by saturating and cracking aromatics while removing contaminants such as metals, sulfur and nitrogen.
  • Hydrodewaxing provides pour-point reduction by converting waxes to base oils.
  • Hydrofinishing yields base oils that are low in color, odor and volatility, but are high in stability. Our base oils are typically water-white in color.
