OLEFINS AND POLYMERS

MANUFACTURING STARTS HERE

Some refined products, like olefins and polymers, require another level of science beyond the traditional methods required for fuels. We specialize in these ingredients that help manufacturers make appliances, automotive parts, foams for producing furniture and shoes, and countless other goods.

Polypropylene

Grades of polypropylene are available for fabrication processes such as extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, blow molding, biaxially oriented film (BOPP), fiber spinning, slit tape, extrusion coating, and laminating. The physical properties and ease of processing polypropylene make it an attractive material when competing with more expensive resins in a number of demanding applications. The Flint Hills Resources polypropylene facility in Longview, Texas, is ISO 9001 certified.

Ethylene

Ethylene and liquid ethylene are used to produce polyethylene, PVC, ethylene glycol and styrene monomer, which in turn are used to manufacture a wide range of consumer products including packaging, televisions, cameras and other electronic equipment.

Expandable Polystyrene

These resins are typically molded into products for the construction and packaging industries. Applications include insulation for roofing and walls, or protective packaging for electronics, perishable foods and other consumer goods.

The expandable polystyrenes produced at Flint Hills Resources are very small beads with sizes ranging in diameters from 400 to 1,600 microns. The beads contain a blowing agent (pentane) that allow customers to expand the resins and then mold various forms as low as one pound per cubic foot, depending on product grade and processing equipment.
